Formerly the villages and cities on the Costa Blanca were dependent on agriculture or fishing or both .

Cities such as Denia , Calpe , Moraira , Altea, Alfaz del Pi , Benidorm and Torrevieja Villajoyosa were villages of fishermen and had also an important citrus production , olives , persimmons and almonds etc .

This business continues but the cities have grown and the tourism industry is now even more important to the economy than fishing and agriculture.

The growth of tourism in the cities of the Costa Blanca has also attracted related businesses such as hotels , real estate, car rentals, restaurants and bars. This has meant that the population has grown in a proportional manner and has crated jobs for people from the area and from other parts.
The Costa Blanca has also seen an increase in foreign-born people who have moved to the coast . Mostly from other European countries.
